Felicity Fox Wool Mask

Felicity Fox and Margot Tenenbaum!

For my first post, I want to share this lovely wool halloween mask I made from a felted wool sweater. My friends and I all dressed up as different Wes Anderson characters. I was Felicity Fox from The Fantastic Mr. Fox - a great movie.

I started the project by sketching out a paper mask, just like making a muslin. I redid the paper mask several times, moving the eyes, making it wider, etc. until I got the right fit. Then I cut the mask out of a felted wool sweater. I was lucky enough to have an orangish sweater left from an earlier project, and I think the color is perfect.

I also cut a matching piece of black felt for the back of the mask and a smaller piece of plastic. The plastic is sandwiched between the two pieces of fabric for extra strength. After hand sewing all the fabric together, I painted the wool with a mix of acrylic paint and black india ink.

Finally, I added some tuffs of batting at the ears, some cute whiskers out of black embroidery thread, a cute little black felt nose, and black ribbon to tie it on.

This was such a fun project, and I was so proud to have made a big part of my costume myself! Now I want to try making a ton more. I keep thinking a blue whale would be so cute, I still need to figure out how to make him work :)

Thanks!
